Behavioral Effects

Video: The Brain's Affected Areas of Behavior

Alcohol damage to a baby's developing brain and central nervous system may cause many problems that affect the person's behavior.

The person may be

  • inattentive
  • hyperactive
  • volatile
  • impulsive
  • overly sensitive to sensory stimuli
  • extremely vulnerable to peer pressure
  • poorly self-regulated
  • lacking social skills
  • thrown "off kilter" with transitions (from one activity to another; from one room or environment to another)
  • emotionally about half his or her chronological age

Because of these problems, people with FASD cope best in a structured, calm environment.
